The Hair Growth Cycle Explained

Anagen (Growth): Anagen represents the active phase of hair growth, characterized by rapid cell division and noticeable hair lengthening. Typically, around 90% of hair follicles are in this phase, which can persist for anywhere from 2 to 8 years.

Catagen (Regression): During the catagen phase, which spans over 2 to 3 weeks, cell production slows down, and the hair follicle undergoes a reduction in size. This is when the hair shaft starts to detach from the bottom of the follicle, forming what is known as a "club hair."

Telogen (Resting): The term "telogen" originates from the Greek words "telo" meaning end and "gen" meaning produce. It signifies the conclusion of active hair production as the follicle enters a state of dormancy or cell quiescence. The follicle can remain in this resting phase for up to 3 months while the club hair remains intact.

Exogen (Shedding): Concurrent with the telogen phase, exogen is the stage where hairs naturally shed from the follicle. During this time, new hair growth commences within the follicle as it transitions back to the anagen phase, beginning the cycle anew.

What Disrupts the Natural Hair Growth Cycle?

The disruption of the natural hair growth cycle is often the root cause of a significant portion of hair loss cases. Numerous factors, both known and recognized, can exert an influence on hair loss, encompassing genetics, hormonal imbalances, illnesses, medications, and lifestyle choices.

These underlying factors have the potential to modify the cycling of hair follicles, leading to a shorter anagen phase, delayed anagen phase, or hair thinning due to follicular miniaturization.

While we may not have the ability to alter our genetics, lifestyle choices represent a crucial factor within our control that significantly contributes to hair loss.
